Amtrak train collision in Cayce, South Carolina results in fatalities and numerous injuries

Nancy Salley • February 5, 2018
Sunday morning at approximately 2:30 a.m. ET, an Amtrak passenger train collided with a CSX Corp. freight train outside Columbia, S.C., in Cayce, S.C. Two Amtrak employees, the engineer and the conductor, have been reported killed in the collision. There are reports of over a hundred passengers being taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from scratches and bruises to severely broken bones. According to Gov. McMaster, it appeared that the CSX freight train was stopped on the track it was supposed to be on but that the Amtrak was on the wrong track at the time of the collision. This railroad accident follows the Amtrak railway accident last Wednesday in Virginia, when a chartered Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress slammed into a garbage truck. It also follows the derailment of an Amtrak train near Tacoma, Washington, in December.

With the aging transportation infrastructure in the United States, railway accidents are a growing concern. Failure to properly inspect and maintain tracks, bridges, crossings, warning signals and other railway equipment can lead to train accidents from derailments, collisions with vehicles and collisions with other trains. Railroad accidents also occur from human error in operation of trains or switches. These human errors can be from a lack of training, a lack of supervision, overworked railway employees or railway workers working while impaired. No matter the cause, railroad accidents can result in severe injuries and fatalities to passengers, occupants of vehicles struck by trains or even the nearby public.
